Emma and three noble ladies joined a hunting party of noblemen, knights and squires in the morning a few days later. They rode into the forest on their horses. Many hunting dogs, wearing collars around their throats, followed them. Lord Osbert, the master huntsman, blew his hunting horn. Everyone stopped.

“I’ve only gone hunting one time. I’m excited,” Emma whispered to the other ladies.

“The ladies mostly talk and stay together while the men are hunting. That’s why I brought my falcon,” laughed Lady Muriel. She stroked her bird that was perched on her long leather glove.

“`Tis cold outside,” Lady Avoca said, wrapping her cape around her.

“Aye,” agreed Lady Muriel as the cold wind was blowing.

Lord Osbert blew his horn. As they started hunting, the hound dogs raced ahead to pick up the scent of a deer. They started barking.

Sir Richard yelled. “The hound dogs got the scent of a deer. They’re chasing it now.” They started riding after the hounds.

“It’s a stag,” called out Wydo. They chased the male deer, zigzagging all around the trees and shrubs throughout the forest.

“Oops,” cried out Lady Muriel as she crashed into the bark of a tree. Falling off her horse, she tumbled to the ground. Everyone stopped riding.

“Are you all right?” Wydo asked.

“Aye … I just got a small bump on my forehead. I’m sure I’ll be fine,” she said, struggling to her feet.

“It’s past noon. Let’s eat our dinner now,” Lord Osbert said.

They spread out blankets on the dirt ground in a clearing in the woods. They took out the baskets filled with food. The hound dogs that were hunting rested. Other hounds continued chasing the deer.

After eating, they started following the hounds all around the tall trees covered with yellow, red and brown leaves.

Suddenly, a wolf crossed Emma’s path. Her favorite horse Shadowtop got frightened and started galloping in another direction. “Whoa boy! Whoa!” she was yelling, pulling back his reins. But Shadowtop kept on galloping. A hound dog raced after them.

“Emma, I’m coming,!” yelled Wydo. When the squire caught up to her, he grabbed Shadowtop’s reins. Finally the horse stopped.

“I thank thee,” gasped Emma, taking deep breaths.

“I’m glad you’re all right,” Wydo said.

“We’d better get back,” Emma said.

“Hey, there’s a flock of larks flying in circles,” Wydo said. He shot an arrow at the birds with his crossbow. “I caught one of them.” He put the lark into his net.

“Oh, the poor bird,” Emma said sadly.

“We have to hunt to have food to eat,” he replied.

Emma nodded. “That’s true.”

All at once, three peasants were running in front of them. “I saw one of the men carrying a rabbit in a net, and they’re wearing hoods. They’re running away because they’re hunting without permission from their lord.”

“If they get caught, they’ll really get punished,” she said with a sigh.

“They must really be hungry and want fresh meat to hunt without their lord’s permission,” he said.

“Aye,” she agreed.

When they got back, the ladies were sitting on a large wool blanket. “I’ll go back to the hunt,” said Wydo, galloping away.
